The WARGAMING.NET World of Tanks Augmented Reality Experience is an iOS and Android app that lets users battle historic military tanks and planes in their current environment. Using the app’s menu, users can select from a Soviet T-44 tank (a never released tank that isn’t on display anywhere in the World), a German Tiger 1 tank, and a Stuka dive bomber airplane. With a 3D version of their military machinery selected, users can place realistic objects within their environment to pit them against each other in an epic AR battle that features animations of tanks and planes firing their defense systems.

For this project, Gravity Jack leveraged the Apple ARKit and Android ARCore Augmented Reality platforms so that the battles can take place both at scale and on a tabletop. The AR experience includes animations that showcase the assembly of the tanks and planes with text callouts that inform users of the different part names on the 3D model. This project is Gravity Jack’s second project with WARGAMING.NET and came about after the successful release of the AR tank installation at the Tank Museum in Bovington, England. Gravity Jack worked closely with the client for this project for a successful release in Japan, England, Korea, and several other countries.

This was Gravity Jack and WARGAMING.NET ‘s second project together. Our development process remained the same for both project’s, however, the World of Tanks AR Experience was a public release in several countries and also included new technologies, mainly Apple’s ARKit and Android’s ARCore. The Gravity Jack process includes:

Puts us in the shoes of a potential user to make informed decisions about the functionality and flow of the project.

The blueprints of a project that put the design and development teams on the same page prior the development

Integrating branding, style guides, and more to give the project cohesive look and feel

Development begins with the architecture of the project with integration tests help verify that all software is written based on the project requirements

A test plan is created where the project is tested at each development milestone and again multiple times upon competition to ensure a seamless experience

Working alongside the client, a process is established to launch the project based on the intended audience. The code is then packaged up and provided to the client!

Gravity Jack worked closely with the team at WARGAMING.NET to ensure the 3D asset creation of the Soviet T-44 tank, German Tiger 1 tank, and Stuka dive bomber airplane were highly realistic replicas of the original machines.

3D Development

Realistic 3D artwork that can be viewed from any angle

Gravity Jack’s quality assurance runs tests to ensure that the experience is compatible with both mobile and tablet devices

UI/UX development for mobile devices with larger screen sizes

Whether it’s at the mall or in a living room, Gravity Jack developed an Augmented Reality experience that brings historic tanks and planes to life within a users environment.

The Goal

Follow the WARGAMING.NET brand and create a gaming experience where users can interact with and learn about historic tanks and planes on their mobile devices.

Gravity Jack’s Solution

Create a series of realistic 3D models and animations that users can place within an AR scene. To add the gaming component, Gravity Jack added the ability for the tanks and planes to fire missels at eachother and battle against eachother.

The Result

An iOS and Android mobile application that can be downloaded across several different countries that is home to an AR-based gaming experience that allows WARGAMING.NET fans to interact with beyond their regular gaming system.
