SANDMAN INSTAGRAM FILTER
We made it to Comic-Con! Well, at least one of our projects did. In a partnership with Civic and their client, Audible (an Amazon Company), Gravity Jack developed a series of custom Instagram filters based on their original series, The Sandman. Within the Comic-Con venue, Audible had a series of elaborate sand sculptures representing different scenes found in The Sandman book.
While viewing the sculptures, attendees were encouraged to scan a QR code with their phones, which prompted them to open the Instagram app. Once Instagram opened attendees were met with a custom filter specific to the sand sclpture and the scene in the book. For the Instagram filters, Gravity Jack developed custom 3D art and lively animations which included frozen icicles, butterflies, and hypnotic smoke. The development of this project served as another level of engagement for the Comic-Con event while also leveraging social media to promote their original series, The Sandman.

THE PROJECT PROCESS
With Comic-Con quickly approaching, Civic and Audible wanted to take their spot at the event to the next level. To make this happen Gravity Jack worked closely with the team to create a series of custom Instagram filters.

PROJECT DEVELOPMENT
Wanting to leverage Instagram as a promotional tool for the project while at Comic-Con, Gravity Jack developed the filters for Audible’s Sandman series using the Spark AR SDK. From there, we were able to tie the specific filters to the QR codes that were stationed in front of each sand sculpture that was modeled after a location within the book. Each QR code would prompt one of three filters that would leverage 3D assets and animations that best-depicted scenes from the book. These filters included:
- A hazy environment that mimics smoke coming from a Moriarty’s pipe — a character in the Sandman series.
- Snowfall animations which brought to the life the vampiric apocalypse of Impact Winter from the book.
- Butterflies flying all around the sand sculpture of the character Morpheus.
While the sand sculptures created by Civic and Audible were a site to see by themselves at Comic-Con, Gravity Jack was ecstatic to develop these custom Instagram filters to take their experience over the top!
