It’s the kind of technology that high budget Hollywood movies place in the far away year of 2100. The kind of technology you imagine while reading Ray Kurzweil.

What most fail to realize is that this technology has already been developed, and it’s ready to change the world at this very moment. It’s called Adroit, and it is the most advanced technology within the space of augmented reality — by a long shot. This is computer vision, capable of detecting real world objects in everyday environments. Gone are the pesky markers, that held AR back for many years from reaching it’s full potential. Quite frankly, Adroit is augmented reality for the real world.

In our past articles, we explain how augmented reality can make a major impact in a wide range of industry verticals, including construction and oil & gas. In many of these industrial applications, there are certain level of safety that must be maintained, and every partner we’ve spoke to agrees on one thing: AR can and will play a major role in increasing the standard of safety — from risk mitigation, to maintenance. Today’s writeup takes that concept to the extreme.

There is a multitude of ways that Adroit can be a powerful tool on the battlefield, in and out of combat. Adroit equips members of the military with incredible tools for something as simple as increasing efficiency in mechanical assembly.

On The Front Lines

There is no debate that well executed augmented reality experiences will give our military an advantage in the battlefield, but how? The video above shows one instance of how Adroit can scan any military vehicle (for example, a tank) and instantly run a comprehensive diagnostics test. It provides a simple, but important example of the tank’s battery malfunctioning.

One of the most common situations that occur in the military field is the need for a specialist when equipment goes down, fails or needs another type of maintenance. The costs of bringing a trained individual in can be massive, not to mention the critical time (and potential advantage) that is lost in the meantime. What if, in worst-case-scenarios, every member of our military had access to intuitive, step-by-step directions — anytime, anywhere? How would processes improve? How could those funds be used elsewhere?

In the video above, repair instructions are sent straight to the on-site soldiers’ heads up display (HUD). Adroit’s capabilities don’t stop there. The battery concept can be applied to the entire vehicle — brakes, engine, bearings — the list goes on.

We can take the same idea and easily transition into other battlefield scenarios, such as a malfunctioning firearm, an AC unit, etc. For example, if there were to be a jammed firearm, our AR technology can provide instructions on how to disassemble certain parts of the gun and quickly reassemble them in a matter of moments. In the case that the firearm requires specialized repair, Adroit would have the ability to inform the soldier that the firearm is inoperable, and instruct them to move onto the backup plan.

In the heat of battle, the men and women of our military don’t have time to pause for instructions or search an index of what could possibly be wrong. They need answers immediately, and they definitely need to be hands-free amidst the chaos. Having Adroit solves both of these issues, which we believe is instrumental in our nation’s efforts to, ultimately, save lives.

Behind The Scenes

Even for those in the military who aren’t on the frontlines, Adroit offers solutions. Location-based intelligence is still an intricate part of military strategy. Countries and regions of all shapes and sizes that can be incredibly hard to distinguish with just the naked eye. Reviewing a map with Adroit however, is a complete game changer.

Users could have the ability to click on a certain land mass and have it place them in that location as if they were actually there. They could even gesture towards a location and have it bring up information like the population of a city or number of troops that are currently on the ground. Similar to a real map, virtual pins could be placed across important locations and then have them sent to colleagues — all without having to sit behind a computer.

Assembly & Production

Alright, let’s take a step out of the heat of battle and into a use for Adroit that has potential to reach beyond just the military — manufacturing. For the sake of this article we will however keep the theme going.

Assembly and production is one of the major components to the success of our defense systems. While the efficiency of our country’s current process is a highly debatable topic, one thing that we can all agree on is that AR is the future of mechanical assembly.

Risk mitigation is real, and while engineers are (of course) experts, the human element inevitably leaves a gap between perfection. This is where Adroit strikes again. Tanks, trucks, airplanes, and helicopters can all be produced with minimal human error and increased turnaround time. Adroit removes all of the guesswork from the operation. It gives mechanics the ability to know the exact size and location of where every bolt should be placed, without ever having to take their eyes off of the task at hand.

If something is out of place or missing, a notification can immediately be sent to the heads up display. Users will no longer have to trace their steps back to find what caused the error. The problem, in and of itself, will have already been identified, and the instructions how to correct it will be provided to the mechanic instantly, ensuring that the assembly can keep moving forward with little to no time wasted.

We realize that some of the scenarios laid out here may seem a little far-fetched. Perhaps is seems more like something that would have Tony Stark knocking down our door to get his hands on. We hear it a lot, but the truth of the matter is that this technology is here and happening now. We are equipping the future of major industries that are looking to take that next step in process and procedure-based efficiency.
